AHR 101 Principles of Atatürk and History of Reforms - I
Bu derste kavramlar ve Osmanlı yenileşmesi, Avrupa’daki gelişmeler, sanayi devrimi ve Fransız ihtilali, Yeni Osmanlılar, Meşrutiyet, İttihat ve Terakki Cemiyeti, Trablusgarp ve Balkan Savaşları, I. Dünya Savaşı, Milli Kurtuluş Savaşı hazırlık dönemi, Kongreler, Misak-ı Milli, TBMM Dönemi, Milli cephelerin kurulması, Lozan Antlaşması konuları anlatılmaktadır.
TRL 101 Turkish Language I
Dersin içeriğini: Dilin tanımı, önemi ve özellikleri; Dillerin doğuşu; yeryüzündeki diller ve sınıflandırılması; Dil-düşünce-kültür ilişkisi; Türkçenin dünya dilleri arasındaki yeri; Türk dilinin tarihî dönemleri, günümüzdeki yayılma alanları; Türkçedeki seslerin özellikleri, sınıflandırılması ve çeşitli ses olayları; Türkçedeki kök ve eklerin işlevleri; Yazım kuralları, noktalama işaretleri ve uygulanmaları ile ilgili çalışmalar oluşturur.
COM 101 Computer Skills I
Bu derste, bilgisayarın tarihi gelişimi, bilgisayar teknolojisindeki yeniliklerin gelişimi, bilgisayarın çalışma sisteminin anlaşılması, yazılım ve donanım yapılarının analizi, Microsoft Word’de dosya açma, metin biçimlendirme, özel simgeler, kenarlıklar, kelime bulma, tablolar, kopyalama, sayfa yapısı, düzeltme, nesne ekleme, çizim yapma, araç çubuklarının kullanılması öğretilir.
ETP 101 Comparative Structure I
The aim of this course is to compare and contrast Turkish and English within the framework of translation to understand the influence of one language on the other in term of grammar and usage. It will provide the necessary basic skills, techniques and strategies involved in two-way translation.
ETP 103 Interpretation Skills I
This course concentrates on subtitle translation for documentaries, feature films and TV programs. An introduction will also be made to the basics of synchronized translation.
ETP 105 English Usage and Style I
This course will focus on reading and writing of different types of texts, grammar, placing emphasis on developing students ability to comprehend complicated and sophisticated texts of different types and register, and to write texts of different types and register.
ETP 107 Introduction to Translation
This course aims to identify and discuss basic concepts and problems in the area of Translation studies. In this course, students develop a strong awareness of the issues in the discipline and learn the essentials of modern translation theory through analysis and practical applications. Students study on different types of texts; poems, proses, short stories.
ETP 111 Ethimology Studies
Etymology is the study of the history of words. The aim of this course is to describe how words change from culture to culture overtime. This course develops students’ etymological knowledge and perspective through analyzing related languages.

AHR 102 Principles of Atatürk and History of Reforms - II
ATA 101’in devamı olan bu derste, Saltanatın kaldırılması, Cumhuriyetin ilanı, Halifeliğin kaldırılması, Cumhuriyet dönemi yeni hukuk düzeni, eğitim alanındaki devrimler, kültür ve toplumsal alanda gerçekleşen devrimler, ekonomik alanda yapılan devrimler gibi Siyasi, sosyal ve ekonomik devrimler ile 1923-1930 ve 1930 – 1938 yılları arasındaki Atatürk dönemi dış politikası, Atatürk İlkeleri, Atatürk sonrası Türkiye, Atatürk ve Gençlik konuları ele alınmaktadır.
TRL 102 Turkish Language II
TD101’in devamı niteliğindeki bu dersin içeriğini kelime ve kelime grupları; cümle, cümleyi oluşturan birimler ve cümle çeşitleri, yazılı anlatımın özellikleri, yazılı anlatımda plan, tema, bakış açısı, ana düşünce, yardımcı fikirler, paragraf, anlatım biçimleri; resmî yazılar (tutanak, bildiri, rapor, iş mektupları); dil yanlışları (yazım kuralları ve noktalama işareti yanlışları: anlatım bozuklukları, sese dayalı yanlışlar); duygu ağırlıklı yazılar (şiir); olay ağırlıklı yazılar (hikaye, roman, tiyatro, gezi yazısı, anı); inceleme yazıları (röportaj, biyografi); düşünce yazıları (makale, fıkra, deneme, eleştiri, günlük); sözlü anlatım türleri (panel, tartışma) gibi konular oluşturur.

Dersin içeriğini Power Point programına giriş, slayt ve sunularla çalışma, sunuların biçimlendirilmesi, slaytlarda animasyon, sunu görünümleri, slaytlarda renk düzenleri, slaytlarda sayfa yapısı, araç çubuklarını kullanma, Outlook’a giriş, e-posta işlemleri, adres defteri, klasör işlemleri, takvim yönetme, görevler, notlar, Excel’e giriş, çalışma sayfaları, hücrelerin biçimlendirilmesi, hücre açıklamaları, veri sistemi ile çalışma, grafikler, dosya işlemleri, sayfa yapısı, veri yönetimi, makrolar, fonksiyonlar, Excel de çizim, araç çubukları gibi konular oluşturmaktadır.

ETP 106 English usage and Style II
This course will cover report writing, academic writing and note-taking, as well as reading for academic purposes. (getting the main idea of articles, library research, scanning sources).
ETP 104 Interpretation Skills II
This course will follow on form Interpretation Skills I, and will further develop the topics and the focus of Interpretation Skill I.
ETP 108 Writen Media Translation
This course will focus on translation of new items, articles, editorials, cartoons and film, pres, play, concert, book and sports reviews for written media. It will also include translation of written media materials for oral presentation e.g. news and feature programs for radio. Translation of these materials will be from English into Turkish and From Turkish into English.

III. YARIYIL /THIRD SEMESTER
ETP 203 Consecutive Translation I
This course aims to at enabling students to acquire mastery in sight translation and consective translation. With this view, students are introduced techniques of effective listening, note-taking and memory development. The also learn how to deal with stage fright and how to get prepared for a conference. After these preparations are completed, students practice sight translation and consecutive translation through the use of manuscripts of assoted speeches and oral presentations on a wide variety of topics.
ETP 205 Business Translation I
The aim of the course is to enable students to acquire written translation knowledge and skills required in the field of business and tourism. It includes reading and translation of a wide variety of business letters (i.e. Enquiry, order, complaint, letter of application) and texts related to topics on business (i.e. foreigh trade, insurance, customs and procedures, bill of loading) the course aims at raising students’ awareness and understanding of terminology in the field of tourism and hotel managment and focusing on practice in the translation of materials such as tourism geography, tourism marketing, hospitality.
ETP 209 Theories and Techniques of Translation
The aim of this course is to explore the nature of problems raised in translation both from turkish to English and English to Turkish. Varios theories concerning the process of translation will be introduced and student will engage in critical analysis of the quality and adequacy of translation.
ETP 207 Literary Translation
This course will consist of written translation from English into Turkish of literary material which will include the translation of literary articles, poems, stories, screenplays and plays.
ETP 211 Subtitling I
This course aims to teach students how to translate subtitle of a movie effectively through practical applications.
ETP 217 Social Text Translation I
This course aims at developing student’s awareness and understanding of terminology in the field of social sciences and will concentrate on practice in the translation of topics such as international politics, international organizations, history, music, art, theatre.
ETP 213 Technical Translation I
The iam of this course is to develop students’ pratical knowledge and undestanding in different areas os sciences and technology and to equip them with terminology used in different areas for recognition and/or production and be able them to translate by using appropriate structure, terminology, register and tone. Topics include agriculture, environment, geology, construction, etc.
IV. YARIYIL / FOURTH SEMESTER

ETP 206 Business Translation II
The course focuses on equipping the students with terminology of banking and financeand will cover the reading and translation of materials relating to fields such as banking operations and stock market. The course will also familiarizes students with legal documents and enables them to translate such documents (i.e. contract, specifications, public notary, invitation to bids) used in business world.
ETP 212 Subtitling II
The aim of this course is to improve the students’ previous knowledge from the course of Subtitling I. In this course, students will get experienced by applying their knowledge through translations.
ETP 214 Technical Translation II
This course follows on from Technical Translation I and further develops the topics and focus of it. Topics include architecture, pharmacology, medicine, engineering, telecommunication, etc.
ETP 216 Translation Project
The project will cocnsist of a large-scale piece of translation from Turkish to English. The project is intended to combine all skills learned and practiced during the program. Students will also be required to analyze their project experience in an extended piece of writing.
Departmental Elective Course
ETP 244 Legal Translation (2+1)3
This course aims to train students in interpreting and translating texts which cover diverse areas of law. Students will be familiar with authentic legal terms both in Turkish and English.
ETP 282 Lexicology (2+1)3
Although translation is never a word-for-word transfer process, words are the building blocks of language and translation. So vocabulary is one of the major tools in both comprehension and reformulation phases of translation. For the translation product to be satisfactory, the translator has to have a good amount of vocabulary stored in their active memory, besides having a good command of the dictionary. This course aims at enabling translation students to have an above-the average amount of vocabulary, to recall words readily, during interpretation aspecially and to use the dictionary efficiently and accurately.
ETP 272 Semiotics (2+1)3
Marcel Daneis defÅŸnes as the discipline that endeavors to understand the human quest for meaning. The field of translations, which is all about the transfer of meaning, can benefit from the concepts of semiotics in analyzing and decoding communicative significations. This course helps translation students to acquire awareness about the subtle meanings of linguistic and non-linguistic signs in general and alsohelp them to decode and encode social, cultural and linguistic meanings in particular.
ETP 262 Translation for Dubbing and Subtitling (3+1)4
This course concentrates on synchronized translation for dubbing purposes. Students will work on authentics materials such as feature film, documentaries, TV programs and cartoons.
School Elective Course
ETP 224 Social Text Translation Sciences II (1+1)2
This course will follow on from Translation for Social Sciences I and will further develop the topic and the focus. The topics to be covered include sociology, psychology, anthropology, geography, archeology, philosophy (case studies).
ETP 252 Societies and Culture (3+1)4
The course aim to familiarize students with the language of social sciences through comparing and contrasting attitudes, beliefs, traditions and ways of behaving related to the family, class and status, education, health and welfare, religions, economics, goverment and law and order. The course will also examine the concept of culture and evaluate the effect of external influences on national cultures and behavior.
