Today, the discipline of International Relations does not only study the relations between states, but also the relations between substate actors (non-governmental organizations, individuals), suprastate actors (international and regional organizations, multinational companies, non-state organizations), and societies. Therefore, the need for experts who are educated through an interdisciplinary program in International Relations has been increasing each passing day. Today, International Relations graduates have to know and be able to shape not only the foreign policies of the states, but also the requirements and behavioural patterns of non-state actors.
With this point of view, Department of International Relations aims to educate students through its interdisciplinary courses of study not only in the field of international relations, but also in other academic fields like political science, sociology, history. On the other hand, in order to enable students to take courses on subjects they’re interested in, elective courses have been intensely incorporated in the academic program. In elective courses, particular regions (such as the USA, Russia, Central Asia, the European Union) are studied as well as existing international problems (such as environment, energy, security).
In the globalising world, graduating from university as knowing only one foreign language is considered insufficient. In this context, students of Istanbul Arel University are obliged to take second foreign language courses (Russian, German, French, Chinese, Spanish, Italian, Greek, Arabic).
Through the Erasmus program, students have the opportunity to know better about other cultures. Graduates of this Department can work in foreign departments of ministries especially of Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in non-governmental organizations, in international/regional organizations and companies, and in research centers.
