About Us

In the English Preparatory Program within Istanbul Arel University School of Foreign Languages, taking all the new developments and up-to-date methods into consideration and adhering to the original logic of language teaching, a specially designed English Language Teaching program has been put into practice. In this way, our students are divided into 3 or 4 basic groups in line with their goals and expectations from language learning. Thus, the language teaching programs at different levels have been devised for our students who have the same goals and aspirations and these programs have been carried out successfully by experienced and competent teaching staff.

The only aim in our language teaching is to make students love English and to make them learn the language consciously so that they can use it in their personal and professional lives.

As the School of Foreign Languages, our objective is to make our students learn at least one foreign language and to provide them with the mentality that a foreign language is not something that is taught, but it is something that is learnt. There have also been plans to carry out many different educational activities for teaching different languages such as Russian, Italian, Spanish and Chinese, etc.

The English preparatory students at the School of Foreign Languages are evaluated every 7 weeks throughout the academic year. Students’ Foreign Language Learning (FLL) skills are constantly supported by various tasks, and students’ successful fulfilment of their objectives is mostly rewarded. In the course of learning English, the ultimate target of our students is to use the language for productive purposes.

In ELT, we use all the facilities of technology and multimedia rather than the classical language teaching in the classroom as we adopt an approach in which individual skills and abilities are taken into account. Prep students practise English with the help of a software called “Smartboard/ E-beam” which has been designed to teach the language in an interactive way. Our instructors use all the audio-visual material and means in teaching. They see the students as active elements in the learning environment. Furthermore, CALL (Computer Assisted Language Learning) laboratory has been set up and parts of the lessons are conducted in the multimedia environment. This laboratory will also be used as the International TOEFL- IBT Test Centre very near future.

Within the English Preparatory Program, prep students take up clubs – such as Speaking Club, Writing Club, Self –access Internet Studies, Scrabble Club and Drama Club – in their self study periods after lessons and they have a chance to reinforce what they have learnt. All these activities are carried out by our coordinator instructors. As a result of these activities, at the end of almost every academic year, students stage a play in English.

The English programs for the undergraduate and graduate levels are tailored according to the specific needs of the students in view of the guidelines of such instructional programs as ESP ( English for Specific Purposes ) and EAP (English for Academic Purposes ). In this way, students are given the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the professional terminology in their respective fields as well as general English. Besides they attend all the activities such as presentations and projects that involve the foreign language they are learning.

Goals and Objectives in Foreign Language Teaching (FLT) are as follows:

  • To make our students capable of learning a foreign language on these skills such as Listening, Reading, Writing, Speakingand
  • partly Translation.
  • To educate prep, undergraduate and graduate English program students in a way that they can use the language in real situations
  • (both verbal and written production)
  • To encourage students to have an inquisitive mind by not refraining from asking questions about what they are learning and what
  • they need to learn.
  • To set the academic priorities in foreign language teaching in order to determine the students’ needs and to adopt an understanding
  • which places the student in the centre of the learning environment.
  • To make our students acquire, by deploping all the resources available, the proficiency level prescribed by the Common Eurpean
  • Language Framework, which is the certificate of proficiency commonly acknowledged by the EU countries.
  • To enable students to use the expression “Proficient in a Foreign Language” confidently in their CVs, not merely as an expression
  • but as a justifiable definition so that they can use the language efficiently in their professional lives in the future.
  • And above all, to ensure that our students are fully competent in the foreign language they learn and to make them aware that it is
  • an important part of both their professional and social lives.

Each successful student is rewarded with a “Foreign Language Achievement Certificate”. What is more, our graduating students are given the chance to sit for an internationally acknowledged foreign language test and if successful, they would, in the future, use it as a reference in proof of their proficiency in the foreign language.
