The course will commence with the introduction of the geography as well as leading nations of the region. It will then concentrate on the impact of the Ottoman rule in political, economic and social dimensions on the Balkans from the fourteenth century up until the early twentieth century. Following an examination of the peninsula during the interregnum period, special attention will be devoted to analyzing semicentennial communist epoch in the Balkan states as well as shedding light upon the Greek and Yugoslav alternatives. The last part of the class will focus on the dismemberment of Yugoslavia which precipitated the outburst of bloody wars, economic crises and human tragedies in the immediate wake of the Cold War along with the Western efforts to integrate the Balkan region into the Euro-Atlantic structures to ensure permanent political stability, economic welfare and social harmony in the region.
In this course, gender and gender politics will be addressed in the major theoretical thinkers of the gender debates from the 19th century to the 21st century and their conceptual framework. In these discussions, the thinkers and political issues of the first, second and third wave feminist debates will be centered.
